Radiation Day 8 – Tom Petty sparks San Francisco nostalgia
Your daily beam room music rundown:
- “Fire and Rain,” James Taylor
- “Black Water,” The Doobie Brothers
- “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” Tom Petty
#3 reminded me of the time I played bass guitar in a band, and we had a show at the Red Devil Lounge in San Francisco. Just a few days before the show we had decided that the last song we’d play would be a cover of Petty’s “American Girl,” but I feel like we didn’t put as much practice into learning it as we probably should have.
It was a fun show (probably our largest, in terms of attendance), but I am certain I missed at least 20% of the notes in (a very simplified version of) that baseline for that song that night. “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” is a great song, but “American Girl” absolutely kills.
Alright, I’m off to listen to some more Tom Petty…
